On April 23, 1996, a group of Colorado brewing chemists headed by Dave Thomas, Mike Joyce, Cory O'Neel, Ryan Martyr and Laurie Kowalski established a local section of the ASBC in Colorado. By doing this, they hoped to bring to the state's many microbrewers some of the techniques and information bigger brewers routinely have at their disposal.
Ever since, the Wild West chapter has brought brewers of all types together in a congenial and educational atmosphere. It hosts informal dinner meetings at various breweries and pubs every three months. Lectures, panels and roundtable discussions on brewing-science topics are presented by experts ranging from hop-growers to sensory analysts. These meetings are interspersed with workshops, which give attendees hands-on experience with standard techniques and methods. Please see our Events section for more information.
November
Local Section 8 held a
successful joint meeting in November with the local MBAA chapter at Coors
Brewing Company. Michael Lewis, Professor Emeritus at UC-Davis, shared his
fresh, but well-founded view of the differing perceptions between brewers and
their customers of "old" or "aged" beer. He holds that
what we brewers call "stale" and "oxidized" product is
deemed by most of the drinking public as being "toasty" and "malty",
with as many customers as not preferring the older product! Hmmm....
February
Local Section 8 participated in the Rocky
Mountain Microbrewing Symposium held February 15th at CU-Colorado Springs.
We supported the event by teaching some of the ASBC's Laboratory Methods for
Craftbrewers. Secretary/Treasurer Mike Joyce delivered a lecture and
demonstration of the new Analysis of Malt Grist by Manual Sieve Test.
Robert Foster of Coors Brewing Company taught Hops Physical Examination
and Hand-Rub Aroma
Evaluation. This event was an overwhelming success as judged by the
comments on the feedback forms. The RMMS has offered to host a workshop section
like this for our chapter every year, so we may continue the education annually. This
also allows us to bring the benefits of ASBC to a new and expanding
audience.
We invite you to join us at any one of our meetings and find out what we're up to. There is no membership fee. Unless otherwise noted, a $15 cover-charge, payable at the door, allows you entrance and includes dinner, beer and door prizes. In fact, showing up for a couple of meetings constitutes membership! Workshops are also offered every year. Please contact any one of the officers listed in the Directory for more information.
