WILD YEAST ON LCSM/LWYM
Differentiating Wild
Yeast from Brewing Yeast
These
media are imperfect and results often require interpretation. LWYM
can be especially difficult to "read", for many of the more
exotic brewing yeasts, such as belgian and wheat yeasts, readily grow on
it. Wild
yeast IS NOT present if:
Media
shows no growth, looking much as it did before incubation.
Media
shows only "hazy" background growth with no clearly-visible
colonies.
Media
shows only "pin-prick" colonies, much smaller than 1mm in diameter
(see below).
Some brewing yeast show up as "haze" or "pin-prick"
colonies.
Wild
yeast IS present if:
Media
shows relatively large, "distinct" colonies, greater than 1mm in diameter
(see below).
Media
shows "haze" growth with larger, clearly-visible colonies (see
below).

Wild yeast show up as
"distinct" colonies.

Wild yeast ("distinct")
growing among brewing yeast ("haze").
