WILD YEAST ON LCSM/LWYM

Differentiating Wild Yeast from Brewing Yeast
These media are imperfect and results often require interpretation.  LWYM can be especially difficult to "read", for many of the more exotic brewing yeasts, such as belgian and wheat yeasts, readily grow on it.

Wild yeast IS NOT present if:
Media shows no growth, looking much as it did before incubation.
Media shows only "hazy" background growth with no clearly-visible colonies.
Media shows only "pin-prick" colonies, much smaller than 1mm in diameter (see below).


 Some brewing yeast show up as "haze" or "pin-prick" colonies.


Wild yeast IS present if:
Media shows relatively large, "distinct" colonies, greater than 1mm in diameter (see below).
Media shows "haze" growth with larger, clearly-visible colonies (see below).


Wild yeast show up as "distinct" colonies.


Wild yeast ("distinct") growing among brewing yeast ("haze").
